Geomagnetic Storm Scale Reference — Impact on HF Radio
Operational reference
| Scale | Kp | Likely HF Effect | VHF Opportunity |
| G0 Quiet | 0–4 | Normal to excellent HF; higher bands depend mostly on ionization/MUF. | Normal line-of-sight propagation. |
| G1 Minor | 5 | High-latitude paths can degrade; increased fading and absorption possible. | Aurora scatter becomes possible at high latitudes. |
| G2 Moderate | 6 | Noticeable HF degradation, especially polar and higher-frequency paths. | 6 m / 2 m aurora may become practical farther south. |
| G3 Strong | 7 | HF can become poor and unstable; 40/80 m often become safer choices. | Strong auroral opportunity across more northern/mid-latitude paths. |
| G4–G5 Severe/Extreme | 8–9 | Major HF disruption or regional blackout possible; polar paths especially unreliable. | Rare, widespread auroral propagation opportunities. |
